The USC AGSA has been hard at work since its very successful January 2004 banquet to put the funds raised to good use by helping our Diasporan community as well as the Homeland. The USC AGSA Scholarship application is available here. The deadline for the application is May 15th, 2004.

The Armenian Graduate Student Association of USC was permanently established on May 19, 2002 in Glendale, CA, and officially recognized by USC as a student organization on August 22, 2002 at the inauguration of the Fall 2002 semester. The executive board consists of 6 executives and 4 committee chairs. Various Armenian graduate student groups from different departments at USC have had associations of sorts from time to time, but never before has there been a permanent all-encompassing association that includes graduate students from all departments and programs in its affairs and activities. USC has the largest absolute number of graduate students of Armenian extraction of any institution of higher learning in the Western Hemisphere, and this number is expected to further increase as the Armenian community in Los Angeles establishes itself with yet firmer roots in the coming decades. Hence the importance of the permanent establishment of our organization is vividly clear. Our intentions as an association are as follows:

1. To create a lasting social, academic, and professional network for graduate students and alumni of USC;
2. To organize social events such that graduate students and young professionals of all southern California colleges and universities can meet and bond;
3. To organize cultural activities in the public eye so as to increase exposure and validity to causes and interests important to the Armenian community;
4. To serve the wider Armenian community by organizing fundraisers, campaigns, and initiatives to benefit the Republic of Armenia as well as our communities in the Diaspora.

I wish to extend a very warm welcome to all Armenian graduate students attending the University of Southern California. I am particularly delighted that this year we are fortunate to have several dedicated graduate students who have come forward to revive AGSA and expand its reach to Armenian graduate students enrolled in the various departments and professional schools of the University.

Greetings fellow scholars, professionals and friends. It is with great pride that I welcome you to the USC Armenian Graduate Students Association website for the 2003-2004 academic year. The USC AGSA is testament to the reality that, 88 years after near-annihilation, the Armenian community is alive and thriving at one of the largest, most prestigious higher institutions of learning in the United States: the University of Southern California. AGSA’s inaugural year was a resounding success. We are indebted to the previous year’s executive members for the tremendous effort they invested in establishing the AGSA, assembling a devoted and talented group of representatives, and executing a wonderful set of events and activities.

The current executive team and I are excited about implementing an equally productive and fun-filled agenda. Our focus this year will be on achieving professional growth and development. As such, there will be numerous outlets for networking and learning about different career opportunities. The website will also feature a page with various job postings. I encourage you to peruse the website and contact me or the other executives to discuss any ideas or suggestions you have about events you would like to see take place. I envision AGSA as a forum where aspiring professionals can gather to network, contribute to our community, and build long-term connections.
